Species

EucomisE.autumnalis, with its subspecies amarylifolia and clavata. Not of great garden interest. In Holland you mostly find the specie E.zambesiaca to be sold as E.autumnalis. I think it has been a hick up when the colonist planthunters brought the plants to Europe. Must have been a rough sea!

Eucomis BicolorE.bicolor, one of the most used Eucomis. It has a beautiful creamy white subspecie called bicolor alba but it really stinks. I would like to get some of the features of E.bicolor in my breeding program, not been successful so far.

Eucomis ComosaE.comosa, brings color in to the genus. A bit weak stems, needs some support but wonderfull color and combinations. This brought the fire into my admiration of the genus Eucomis! Has also a nice subspecie, striata. Synonym E.punctata.

E.humilus, As the name suggest you need to bend over to appriciate its delicacy, and the next moment you will be thrown back because of its odour. Its attracks a lot of flies! Great for pots though lovely plant build up, but for mainly of interest for breeding purposes.
E.montana, To me a great plant, of great garden merit. Maybe not as much color in the leaves but the stems are so much stronger. And the two tone flower (the color of its petals sometimes sets of nicely to the dark seedpod) is a true eyecatcher.
E.pallidiflora. Brings horizontally lines into the garden. Reaching up to 100-130 cm’s, these green/white towers of florits are stunning. But its ssp even more! I’ll never forget the first time I saw E.pallidiflora ssp pole-evansii grow, and grow , and grow until it became taller than I am (1.87 mtr). I wonder what Mr. Pole-Evansii has thought when he had his first encounter of this floral giant!

Eucomis RegiaE.regia. A strange one in the genus . The only winter grower and not to be fooled. So, never has been a success in my nursery, never seen it bloom.

E.schijffii. I saw it for the first time at a befriended breeder in South Africa. A true ‘wow’! I have been trying it in my polytunnel but I think I give it the wrong kind of care.
